Sizing to the sofa
A coffee table generally reads best at roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa, with its top between one and two inches below the seat cushion, and 16 to 18 inches of leg room between the two. A tighter room often wants a longer, lower, narrower form rather than a smaller square.
Storage can be built in without bulk: an open lower shelf, a recessed plinth that lifts the mass off the floor, or an angled slot sized for books and magazines.
